Flexible Tuition

Think you can’t afford a St. Michael’s education? Think Again.

Let’s Partner to Make a St. Michael’s Education A Reality.

We believe that the cost of a St. Michael’s education should not be a deterrent to any family, regardless of income and assets.

At St. Michael’s Country Day School, we believe in shaping the future of our children’s school community. We also believe that the advantages of an independent school, (small class size, individualized instruction, leadership opportunities in the classroom and community, and strong arts, technology and athletics programs), should be available to as many academically qualified students as possible. Economic diversity improves the educational and social experience for students and is critical to sustaining a healthy school culture.

What is Flexible Tuition at St. Michael’s?

It replaces the traditional independent school financial aid model with a tuition affordability model.

St. Michael’s Country Day School is thrilled to partner with your family. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning at St. Michael’s, and tuition is no different. Just as we know that there is great diversity in how students learn, we also understand that there is great diversity in families’ income and assets.

What is the purpose of Flexible Tuition?

To help fulfill the school’s mission and embody its values by celebrating diversity in all regards.

Flexible Tuition promotes the representation of families across the full range of the economic spectrum, broadens perspectives, reinforces the core value of community, and expands students’ vision of and for the world. Economic diversity enriches our community, fosters inclusion, and enhances the educational and social-emotional experience for both children and adults.

Benefits of St. Michael’s Flexible Tuition

  • It replaces the traditional financial aid model of discounting tuition or offering "awards" or “grants”, allowing all SMCDS families to contribute meaningfully.
  • Eliminates terms such as “full pay”, “need”, or “aid” – all families contribute.
  • Allows St. Michael’s to offer tuition at the level that each family can afford.
  • Supports each family’s investment in their child’s education by finding an affordable tuition.
  • Prioritizes transparency and communication around tuition and affordability.
  • It is an accessibility-centered approach to tuition.

What Flexible Tuition Does Not Do

  • Need to be paid back (it is not a loan)
  • Get disclosed and discussed publicly (it’s a confidential process)

Flexible Tuition FAQ

The St. Michael’s Country Day School Tuition Assistance program is designed to make a St. Michael’s Country Day School education possible for all families based on demonstrated financial need and the availability of funds. St. Michael’s Country Day School is proud to use the Clarity Application to determine a family’s level of financial need based on the information that families share in the application which includes assets, income, expenses, and debts.

To get started, please go to the Clarity Application and create an account. The application typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The Clarity Application is also mobile-friendly so you can complete it from anywhere. You are also able to save your progress and return at any time. At the end of the application, there is a $60 fee to submit, and you can share your application with additional schools that accept the Clarity Application for no additional charge. Simply use the dropdown menu in the application to select those schools.

Please remember to return to your dashboard after you complete and submit your Clarity Application, as St. Michael’s Country Day School requires you to upload additional tax documentation including the 2024 1040.

The deadline for completing the financial aid application including relevant supplemental documents is May 1st, 2026.

If you need support during the process of completing your application, there is in-app support available through the “Help” button in the bottom left of the screen, as well as email and phone support at support@clarityapp.com or 206-210-3752, in both English and Spanish. The application itself is also fully translated into Spanish.

Flexible Tuition

Each family's Flexible Tuition is based on a comprehensive analysis by an independent financial aid assessment service (Clarity) as well as the school's financial resources. It is determined by a group of trained professionals and is highly confidential. No board members, faculty, or parents are aware of each family's individualized tuition.

Please note that Flexible Tuition does not apply to the Toddler Program. Parents of students applying to the Toddler Program may take part in Flexible Tuition beginning in Preschool. Not participating in Flexible Tuition in the Toddler Class will not affect a family's eligibility to partake in Flexible Tuition in Preschool and years going forward.

Active Military Discount

St. Michael’s is proud of its long, historical connection to the US military and US military families in Newport. Each year, the school enrolls around fifteen to twenty five students from families connected to the Naval Academy’s War College and other service related duties. US military families bring a rich trove of national and international diversity to our community and enrich the experience of all our students.

The school has been exceptionally supportive to US military families through financial assistance. The St. Michael’s Country Day School’s military discount for U.S. families on active duty is 50% for students in grades Kindergarten – Grade 8. (We will offer a 25% military discount for families who have children in the Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs).

How it works

Tuition determinations are made by an analysis of family's entire financial profile, not solely income, and are assessed by the School and a third-party company, Clarity.

Each family’s financial commitment will be customized based on their income, assets, debts and family size, along with financial position of the school, to ensure that every family’s financial investment in a St. Michael’s education is in equitable proportion to their economic resources.
