Create at St. Michael's
Our students are encouraged to learn by doing and creating.
St. Michael’s boasts an extensive arts curriculum which offers students constant opportunities to express themselves, problem-solve, invent, innovate, design, and create.
Drama
In grades K-4, every St. Michael’s student participates and performs in a theater production. Each grade level performs their play during the school day and families are invited to attend. As students get older, they are given increasing responsibility, and the plays increase in length and complexity.
Creative Writing
Creative writing opportunities begin as soon as children can put ideas into writing or into pictures. Students are always given mentor texts to guide them. These texts push them beyond what is expected.
Innovation Lab
All students in 1st through 8th grade take Innovation Lab as a class. The Innovation Lab is a hands-on, experiential workshop designed to facilitate and make visible the problem-solving process. The Innovation Lab fosters and supports opportunities for learning through experimentation. It creates a space for students to make mistakes and learn from them.
Music
Students in Preschool-4th grade participate in a weekly music class. During this time, they use their voices as instruments to learn and perform songs. They also explore concepts of music, learn to read music, and begin learning a variety of instruments such as the bells, recorders, ukuleles, and even plastic bucket drums!
Visual Arts
All students at St. Michael’s take a visual arts course, beginning in Preschool and continuing through 8th grade. In 5th-8th grade, all students take a general art class and a general music class; they also participate in the Arts Program, which provides each student with two arts electives per year that meet twice a week. For visual arts, the offering is a focused Studio Art course.
Performances
At St. Michael’s, we offer many performance opportunities throughout the year, across the grade levels and in various aspects of our Arts program. Many of them are recorded and available for online viewing, and will be archived here for the community to watch on their own schedule.
