Advisory
Students are placed into homeroom groups that serve as their "advisory" group for the school year.
The goal of the advisory program is to provide support for students in order to maximize academic and social/emotional growth and health, all while building and strengthening community. The advisor/advisee relationship is a cornerstone of the upper grade experience.
- Students are placed into homeroom groups with peers from their grade level. These class groupings serve as their "advisory" group as well.
Each day, students gather together in their homeroom classroom. This time is used for formal advisory lessons, conferences to discuss student progress, review the schedule for the day, and go over any special upcoming school events.
Advisors meet regularly with the Associate Head of School to discuss student needs, challenges, and grade-level concerns to plan how to respond to and work with individual students and the group as a whole. At the end of each year, the student’s current advisor will meet with their new advisor for the upcoming year to share relevant information regarding the student.
The responsibilities of the homeroom teacher include:
-
Primary contact between school and home.
-
Monitor student academic success, communicate with all of the student’s teachers regarding performance in each class, and record notes from team meetings on each student in their advisory group.
-
Monitor student social/emotional needs and work with related professionals (Associate Head of School, parents, tutor, reading specialist, learning specialist, consulting psychologist, school nurse, outside support) to implement relevant accommodations.
-
Meets with advisees during office hours and communicates with teachers or students if there is a need.
-
Works collaboratively with other homeroom teachers and advisors to implement advisory programming and develop lessons/plans.
